William Protzman, Jr.

William Protzman, Jr. – William Protzman, Jr, 85, passed away quietly on January 28, 2024, at home surrounded by family. He was born December 24, 1938, in Baltimore, MD, the son of William and Margaret E. (Barbour) Protzman.

William lived a life of service to his family whom he loved dearly and always protected. He served in the US Coast Guard with passion for protecting his country, a passion for the sea, and a passion for protecting others. He graduated with honors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1961 and continued serving until his retirement in 1982. He loved sharing stories about his service on a LORAN station in the Arctic, on coast guard cutters in storms, and on ice patrols in the North Atlantic. He then taught electrical engineering and computer science at Prince George’s Community College, retiring as a tenured professor in 2005, and the University of Maryland, and also tutored for the University of Maine.

In 2006, he settled with his wife, Penelope, in Lamoine, Maine, and thoroughly enjoyed all that Maine offered for the rest of his life.

William was an avid amateur radio operator, at one time being able to send 60 words a minute. He enjoyed many other hobbies and outdoor activities.

William is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Penelope (Tripler) Protzman; his son William and his wife Theresa of Canal Fulton, OH; daughter Elaine and son Eric of Silver Spring, MD; son Richard and wife Patricia of Ranson, WV; seven grandchildren, Jacob, Mary, Lauren, Sarah, Emily, Brooke, and Margaret; and many nieces and nephews.

He will be missed by all who knew him. We wish him fair wind and following seas to his next adventure. W3AKD signing off for the last time… hearty 73…
