CATHERINE DIANA SMITH “KAY” BAR HARBOR – Catherine Diana Smith died peacefully of natural causes August 13, 2020 at the MDI Hospital at age 94. She was born December 1, 1925 in New York City, the daughter of Patrick Joseph Waters of Sligo, Ireland, and Marion Helen Kilgannon of New York, NY. Catherine achieved her GED and pursued a career as a Dietary Aide at St. Luke’s Hospital in Middleboro, MA. Catherine was an advocate for women’s empowerment and rights. She enjoyed baking and creating her famous apple pies. Catherine married Harry Smith Sr. and became a successful homemaker in Roxbury, MA. They later settled in Middleboro, MA with their 4 children, where she was known as the neighborhood mother. Catherine moved to Maine and worked as a chambermaid at the Golden Anchor in Bar Harbor until she retired. She was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Catherine is survived by her younger sister Sally Doyle; son Harry Smith Jr. and his wife Karen Smith of Rochester, MA; Daughter in-law Diane Smith of Middleboro, MA; Karen Smith of Bangor, ME; son in-law Lawrence Hodgkins of Bar Harbor, ME; 11 Grandchildren Stephanie Hodgkins, Dallas Hodgkins, Byron Hodgkins, and Kala Ward of Northeast Harbor, ME; Tamara Türeli of Istanbul, Turkey; Patrick Smith of Hudson, ME; Jeremiah Smith of Lincoln, ME; Jason Smith, Samantha Smith, and Harry Smith III of Rochester, MA; Kara Smith of Los Angeles, CA; 11 Great grandchildren, Eden Hodgkins of Southwest Harbor, ME; Grace Ward of Northeast Harbor, ME; Bella Smith and Sophia Smith of Lincoln, ME; Lara Türeli of Istanbul, Turkey; Aiden Smith and Olivia Smith of Bangor, ME; Kaelyn Smith, Keira Smith, and Wyatt Smith of Rochester, MA; and Emmerson Smith of Los Angeles, CA. Catherine was predeceased by her young brother Martin Smith, younger sister Helen Smith; amazing loving husband Harry Smith Sr. of Ellsworth, ME; Brother in-law Paul Doyle of Framingham, MA; Sons, Thomas Smith of Middleboro, MA; Patrick Smith of Ellsworth, ME; and Catherine Hodgkins of Bar Harbor, ME. The family would also like to recognize the compassion and assistance of Catherine’s caregivers, Marsha Bennoch, Margaret Bishop, James N.

A graveside service will be held on September 12th at 1 PM at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery located beside the Kebo Golf Course in Bar Harbor, ME.
