Richard “Rick” Paul LaPorte, 72, died July 4, 2019 at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born October 23, 1946 in Millinocket the son of Kenneth D. and Velma M. (Mattall) LaPorte.
Richard met Pauline (Cookie) Silvia while stationed at Fort Devens, MA. He married Cookie in 1971 in Medway, ME and lived in the Katahdin area for 32 years, working as camp clerk for Great Northern with a majority of his career as a truck scale operator for Georgia Pacific. They moved to Bar Harbor in 2003 to be close to their daughter, Kathy. Cookie was the love of his life and they were happily married for 35 years before Cookie’s untimely death in 2007 due to breast cancer at age 57. They kept life simple and laughed every day. Family was everything to both of them. He was a member of the Masons, the DAV, a HAM radio operator, and avid photographer. He was a trickster at heart and always kept everyone on their toes and laughing. Rick enjoyed time with his family tremendously and camping at all Maine State parks including Acadia National Park whenever possible. He loved to explore new places, but Acadia was his favorite. His family loved these camping trips and there was always a funny story to bring back home.
Rick is survived by his daughter, Kathy Taylor, husband Eric ; his grandson, Benjamin Taylor, all of Bar Harbor; three brothers, Kenneth LaPorte and wife Susan , Gene LaPorte and his wife Penny and Michael LaPorte ; two sisters Elaine Scott and Karen Deckert and her husband David; many nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
A private family Masonic Service will be held on July 20, 2019 in Medway.
Those who desire may make contributions in Rick’s memory to Friends of Acadia, P.O. Box 45, Bar Harbor, ME., 04609.
