Doyle, Betsy Rose

BAR HARBOR – Betsy Rose Doyle, aged 89, passed away following a long period of illness on May 2, 2018, at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor. She was born October 3, 1928, in Bar Harbor, the seventh child of Ralph Hubert and Mildred Bernice (Keezer) Field.

A lifelong resident of Mount Desert Island, she had a deep knowledge of local lore and family history. Betsy relished in storytelling, drawing upon her many memorable turns of phrase and gentle Downeast accent. She especially cherished her childhood years growing up in the caretaker’s cottage at Chatwold, the former Pulitzer estate on Schooner Head Road. She spoke with great fondness of the fine peach ice cream made there in the kitchen each summer.

In her later years Betsy was an accomplished embroiderer, cross-stitching several intricate angels for her family. She regularly treated her children and grandchildren to candy from Bee’s and her own baked goods, and she enjoyed playing Spite and Malice and other card games with her friends. Every spring Betsy looked forward to the hummingbirds’ return to her backyard feeders. She was proud to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her two daughters, Amy Humber and husband Richard of Dryden, NY, and Tami D’Amico and husband Christopher of Brewer; as well as four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Noel (Lindsay) Humber and sons Blake and Logan of Yorktown, VA; Emily (Jeremiah) Dvorak and sons Adrian and Miles of Ithaca, NY; Jennie (David) Haluska and children Edmund and Matilda of Bangor; and James D’Amico of Bangor. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, her “kissing cousin” Margaret Bishop, and a second family of friends at Malvern-Belmont.

Betsy was predeceased by her husband Frank James Doyle in 1972, as well as by her parents and her eight siblings – Alice Lymburner, Mary “Pat” Young, Ralph “Bunny” Field, Helen Bonesio, Donnie Field, Lizzie Dyment, Carole Carter, and Jackie Field – and several nieces and nephews.

A private graveside committal will be held in Ledgelawn Cemetery at a future date, with arrangements to be handled by Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Maine Seacoast Mission scholarship program at 127 West Street, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609.
