Betty S. Lewis, 93, died on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at her home surrounded by her four children. She was born on July 7, 1930, at home in Lafayette, NJ to John and Anna Snook.

Betty grew up on her parents’ dairy farm and attended a one-room school in Lafayette. She graduated from Newton High School, class of 1947, and attended Rider College. She helped her husband Charles manage Lewis Shoes in Newton, NJ and raise their four children. In 1982, she and Charles moved to Hancock. They owned and operated Ashmore Color Center in Ellsworth. Betty was an active member of the Union Congregational Church of Hancock for 42 years, where she served on many committees and was famous for her donuts.

Betty is predeceased by her brothers and her husband Charles. She is survived by her two sisters, Vivian Hough of Newton, NJ and June Dudley of Wernersville, PA, her daughter Mary Beth DiMarco and husband Steve of Houlton, son Richard Lewis of Hancock, daughter Peg Carlson and husband Carl of Geneva, NY, and daughter Sarah Lewis and husband Larry Ouellette of Austin, TX, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Betty thought she lived in the best time in history, married the love of her life, raised a family, and loved life. She had a matter of fact, no drama dry wit. She cherished her family and her long life, and in turn was loved beyond measure. With her wonderful presence, along with Charlie, she made countless contributions to everyone who knew her and the community which she played an enormous role in creating and sustaining.

There will be a celebration of Betty’s life at the Union Congregational Church in Hancock at 11:00 am on Monday, June 10. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church at PO Box 443, Hancock, Maine 04640.
