Sedgwick
Bernice Eaton Astbury, 94, passed away peacefully, August 5, 2023 at her home in Sedgwick. She was born in Blue Hill Falls June 1, 1929, the daughter of Charles and Vivian (Gilpatrick) Eaton.
She worked for many summer residents who were very dear to her. She worked in the sardine factory in Stonington, at Blue Hill Hospital for 12 years, at Largay’s IGA for 3 years and then at Merrill & Hinckley in the bakery department for 25 years before retiring at the age of 80. She was well known for the hundreds of mittens she’d knit for children and family each year. She also crocheted afghans for all her children and families. Bernice did seasonal work making wreaths and raking blueberries with her husband.
She is survived by her daughters, Ree and husband David of Sedgwick, Margaret Fowler and fiancé Ralph Proctor of Brooksville; sons, Alden Astbury and wife Wanda; Scott Astbury and wife Tammy of Sedgwick; grandchildren, Jeffrey Hamilton and wife Carrie, Tracie Hamilton, Mark Fowler and wife Rachel, Jeremy Fowler and wife Erin, Lois Fowler Beaupain and husband Jeremy, Daryl Astbury and wife Stacy, Dustin Astbury and wife Paige and Kirby Astbury; 13 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; sister, Cressida Keefe; sisters-in-law, Betty Gray and Carol Eaton; many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents; husband of 63 years, Tracy O. Astbury; sister, Lorraine Turner; brother, Charles Eaton, many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank the Home Health & Hospice teams that helped to make it possible for us to keep her home where she wanted to be.
There will be a graveside service for Bernice and Tracy on August 18, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Camp Stream Cemetery, Graytown Road, Sedgwick. A gathering will follow at 856 Sedgwick Ridge Road.
