Joan Grantham passed away peacefully at her home in Hancock, Maine on Saturday August 14 surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born in New York City on May 31, 1930. As a young child she would take her red wagon to the New York library and fill it with books. Her love for reading stayed with her throughout her life.
Joan moved to Somerset Ma with her family and graduated from Somerset High School in 1948. Bryant College followed and she graduated from there in 1949. In 1951 she married her High School sweetheart Robert “Nick” Ainsworth. They had 2 sons, Carl and Curt. Nick worked for Westinghouse, and they moved to Ohio. Joan was busy raising their two boys and spent some time volunteering. Sadly in 1965 Nick passed away from cancer and Joan moved back to MA with her children. First living in Westport where she met her next love and fell head over heels for Harold “Bud” Grantham. She always said how lucky she was to have 2 great loves in her life. The family moved back to her hometown of Somerset in 1968, raised the boys and worked. Joan wrote for the local Newspaper the Spectator while Bud worked as a pharmacist. Joan also spent time volunteering for the local Red Cross. As the boys grew and started lives of their own, Joan and Bud decided to move to Martha’s Vineyard where they spent many years laughing, traveling, loving each other and spending time with friends and family until Buds passing in 1999.
Joan moved to Maine in 2000. She spent the next 21 years living with her son Carl and his wife Kerry{deceased}, watching grandchildren grow, start their own families and great grandchildren being born. She had always been very crafty, quilting and scrapbooking being some of her favorite things to do. She discovered her love for painting and drawing. Joining a seniors art class and having show’s at the local library.
After living such a full life, Bud and Joan are together again laughing and loving.
Joan is survived by her 2 sons Carl and Curt Ainsworth, his wife Joanne. Her grandchildren Erika Closson, Alexandra and her husband Ramon Graham. Alyson Ainsworth and her fiancée Kail Jethmalani, Christopher Ainsworth and his wife Kayla. Six great grandchildren, Anna, Madison, Ethan, Sarah, Leila, and Gabriel.
